How to Verify an MBBS Abroad University in 2026 — NMC, WDOMS and 5 Checks Before You Pay

how to verify MBBS abroad university NMC 2026

Every year, Indian families pay lakhs of rupees to consultants and universities before discovering a fact that would have taken them 10 minutes to verify independently: the university is not recognized by NMC, or the program does not meet FMGL Regulations 2021 requirements. By then, the money is gone. The student has sometimes already traveled. And the options for remedy are extremely limited.

This guide tells you exactly how to verify any MBBS abroad university in 2026 — using official government sources, not consultant documents. The five checks take less than 30 minutes. They could save you Rs 30 to 60 lakhs and 6 years of your child’s career.

Why Independent Verification Is Non-Negotiable

Consultants and agents have a financial incentive to present their recommended universities favorably. Even well-meaning consultants may be working with outdated information — an NMC warning issued in April 2026 may not have reached a consultant who has not checked the NMC website recently.

The only authoritative sources for NMC compliance are the NMC itself and the World Directory of Medical Schools. Everything else — consultancy brochures, university websites, agent presentations, social media testimonials — is secondary and cannot substitute for direct source verification.

This is not about distrusting consultants. It is about protecting your family’s investment with information that is freely and publicly available. A legitimate consultancy will encourage this verification. One that discourages it is a warning sign.

Check 1 — NMC Website Verification

The National Medical Commission maintains an updated list of foreign medical institutions for Indian students at nmc.org.in.

Go directly to nmc.org.in. Navigate to the section for Foreign Medical Graduates or FMGL Regulations. Look for the current list of recognized foreign medical institutions or the list of institutions flagged for non-compliance.

Search for the university by country and institution name. Confirm that it appears on the recognized list and is not on any advisory or warning list.

Important: NMC issues advisories and warnings that are separate from the main recognized institutions list. A university may appear on the main list but have a separate advisory against it — as happened with several Uzbekistan universities in the April 2026 advisory. Check both the recognized list and any recent advisories.

The NMC website also publishes the FMGL Regulations 2021 document, which specifies all requirements a university must meet. If you want to verify a university’s compliance in detail, you can check it against the regulations directly.

Check 2 — World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS)

The World Directory of Medical Schools at wdoms.org is maintained by the World Federation for Medical Education and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research. It is the global reference database for medical schools and is the source NMC uses for international verification.

Go to wdoms.org. Select the country. Search for the university by name. A recognized institution will have a unique ID — for example, Georgia institutions have GA-prefix IDs, Kazakhstan institutions have KZ-prefix IDs.

Confirm the listing shows that the institution is recognized by the relevant national authority — Ministry of Health or its equivalent in the destination country. This listing is separate from NMC recognition but is a prerequisite for it.

If a university does not appear in WDOMS, it is not recognized internationally and its degree will not be valid for NExT eligibility in India. No exceptions.

Check 3 — Confirm the Program Is Fully English Medium

NMC’s FMGL Regulations 2021 require that the MBBS program be conducted entirely in English. This applies to both theoretical and clinical years.

Many universities advertise English-medium programs but transition substantially to the local language — Russian, Kazakh, Georgian, Uzbek — during clinical rotations in Years 3 through 6. This practice exists because clinical staff and patients naturally communicate in the local language.

The compliance question is whether the formal teaching, assessments, case presentations, and curriculum delivery are in English throughout. A program that requires Russian or Kazakh proficiency for clinical training participation may not meet NMC’s full English-medium requirement.

Ask the university for a written confirmation that all 6 years — including clinical rotations — are conducted in English. Also ask specifically whether the internship year in Year 6 is conducted in English at the same institution. If they cannot provide this in writing or become evasive, that is a verification failure.

Check 4 — Confirm Single Institution, 54-Month Duration

NMC’s FMGL Regulations 2021 require a minimum of 54 months of medical education at a single foreign institution. This rules out two common non-compliant arrangements.

The first is offshore campus models, where students spend early years studying in India under a foreign university’s affiliation before moving abroad. Any program that involves studying medicine in India — even for one semester — under a foreign university affiliation is non-compliant. The institution names and addresses in the admission documents must show a foreign address throughout.

The second is transfer arrangements, where students begin at one university and transfer to another. NMC requires all 54 months at a single institution. A student who transfers mid-program, even to a better university, becomes ineligible for NExT for that degree.

Ask the university directly: is the entire 6-year program, including internship, completed at this single campus in this country? Get the answer in writing.

Check 5 — FMGE Pass Rate Verification

This check does not confirm compliance — it confirms quality. A university can be fully NMC-compliant and still produce graduates who consistently fail NExT.

FMGE pass rates by university are published by NBEMS — the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences. The data is available in NBEMS publications and press releases that are publicly accessible.

Ask your consultancy for university-specific FMGE pass rates for 2023 and 2024. Specifically ask for the number of candidates who appeared from that university, not just the pass percentage — a 60 percent rate from 3 candidates is very different from 60 percent from 300 candidates.

If the consultancy cannot provide this data, ask them to look it up from NBEMS sources in front of you. If they refuse or say the data is unavailable, that is a red flag. The data exists and any competent consultancy should have it.

Verification Checklist — 5 Checks in 30 Minutes

Here is the complete verification process in practical terms.

Open nmc.org.in — confirm the university appears on the recognized list and check any recent advisories. This takes approximately 5 minutes.

Open wdoms.org — confirm the university appears with a valid country-specific ID and national authority recognition. This takes approximately 5 minutes.

Email the university admissions department directly — ask for written confirmation that the program is fully English medium for all 6 years including clinical rotations and internship. This takes 2 minutes to write and typically gets a response within 24 to 48 hours.

Ask the university for written confirmation that the entire 6-year program is conducted at a single foreign campus. Specifically ask whether any portion involves studying in India. This can be included in the same email.

Ask your consultancy for FMGE pass rate data by university for 2023 and 2024, with candidate numbers. Compare against country averages and against universities you are evaluating.

Red Flags That Mean Stop and Verify More Carefully

The university name does not appear in a WDOMS search. Any program structure that involves study in India for any portion. The consultancy cannot provide written confirmation of English-medium instruction. The consultancy becomes vague or evasive when asked for FMGE pass rate data. The admission letter shows an address in India rather than the destination country. The program duration is described as “4 plus 1” or “4.5 years” rather than 6 years. The university is named in any NMC advisory from 2023 to 2026.

How Indasia Global Handles Verification for Its Students

At Indasia Global’s Jaipur office, verification is not something we leave to students and families to do after the fact. Before we recommend any university, we confirm NMC compliance, WDOMS listing, English-medium program documentation, and FMGE pass rate data internally.

For Kazakhstan universities specifically, our resident team in Almaty — headed by Dr. Tara Chand Nehra who has lived in Kazakhstan since 1996 — has direct institutional knowledge of KazNMU and Al-Farabi that goes beyond what any document check can provide. Dr. Nehra is himself a KazNMU alumnus. Our recommendations for Kazakhstan universities are backed by three decades of direct experience, not just compliance checklists.

We also encourage every family we counsel to run these five checks independently. If our recommended university passes all five checks, that is an additional layer of confidence. If anything is inconsistent, we want to know about it.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Where can I verify if a foreign medical university is recognized by NMC? Go directly to nmc.org.in. The NMC maintains a current list of recognized foreign medical institutions and publishes advisories against non-compliant ones. Also check wdoms.org for international recognition.

2. Is it enough to check that a university is in the WHO list? The WHO World Directory of Medical Schools is the same as WDOMS at wdoms.org. Appearing in WDOMS is a necessary condition for NMC recognition, but NMC recognition also requires compliance with FMGL Regulations 2021 — check both.

3. Can a university be removed from NMC’s recognized list after I join? Yes. NMC can issue advisories and warnings against universities that were previously recognized if they are found to be non-compliant. This is why checking the NMC website for recent advisories — not just the main recognized list — is important.

4. What happens if I am already enrolled at a non-compliant university? This requires immediate, specific advice from a qualified consultant. Options depend on how long you have been enrolled and what the specific compliance issue is. Contact a consultancy immediately and do not continue paying fees to a non-compliant institution.

5. How do I find FMGE pass rate data for a specific university? NBEMS publishes FMGE results data that includes university-wise information. Ask your consultancy to provide this data from NBEMS sources. Alternatively, search for NBEMS FMGE result press releases which often include university-level data.

6. What if the consultancy says verification is not necessary because they have already done it? Run the verification anyway. It takes 30 minutes and is your independent confirmation that the university meets requirements. A legitimate consultancy will have no problem with you verifying independently — it confirms their recommendation. One that actively discourages independent verification is a warning sign.
